In Austin Texas, can you get around fairly easily without a car?

In Austin Texas, can you get around fairly easily without a car?
I'm moving to Austin from a very small town (i.e. we have no public transportation at all). I have never ridden a bus (besides a school bus), or used the subway or a taxi cab or anything like that. How difficult is it to get around Austin without a car? I'm not afraid of walking or riding a bike to get where I need to go....it's just that when I move I probably won't have access to a car like I do where I live now. Thanks for the help.

you can, but that mean relying on public transportation. and the traffic in Austin is a nightmare. I would suggest trying to get a car, it will make your life easier.

There is public transportation here that is pretty reliable and nice w/good A/C (cheap as well, but I think they are raising the fees sometime in the future) - but it is pretty limited. Make sure you live somewhere on an active bus line if you're not going to have a car, because the buses definitely don't go everywhere. It's possible to live without a car, but it's not desirable since the city is so spread out and nearly everyone who lives here does have a car. Check out http://www.capmetro.org/ - they have all the routes listed with maps and a trip planner where you put in the starting and ending addresses and it will tell you what buses to take and when.

Yes, you have a great chance. In fact, you are doing what most people who live in Austin do in order to transfer in/be accepted by UT. Many future Longhorns start out by taking a few semesters at Austin Community College in order to become eligible for transfer status into the UT system. Good luck and Hook Em Horns!

Ordinarily you would have no problem getting in to UT, but McCombs (the business school) is HIGHLY competitive. That's not to say it can't happen, but you really have to have your stuff together--especially as a transfer student. 3.6 is good, but you're going to be going up against people with higher GPA's, so my advice to you would be to pull together as much additional stuff as you can for your application. Have you done any internships, or anything else that can make your application stand out? I'm sure you've already seen it, but I'm including the link to their admissions page for transfer students. I don't want you to feel discouraged--but you should definitely go at it with everything you have. It might be worth it to talk to someone at UT admissions, if you haven't already done that. At the bottom of the linked page I gave you are some statistics--of the 210 applications they received in 2007, only 31 were accepted--and out of that 18 were transfer students from a 2-year college. I hope this information helps you prepare for your challenge! Good luck!

Casey, Kangotraveler was so concerned with getting his own travel website on the response he gave you significantly misinformation. The School of Business at UT received 554 applications for admission in 2007. They accepted 119, 30% from 2 year colleges. While the first responder is correct is saying many students go to ACC with the intention of transferring to UT later, and there is even advice for ACC students on which courses transfer, when the applications are received, the people from the higher tier 4 year schools are accepted first. The average GPA of students transferring into UT Business in 2007 was 3.82. Hope this helps.

it will go back to the post office. They will tape a slip to your door saying the package had attempted to be delivered. You will need that slip. And it takes 3-5 days from tyler to austin

NOO! not at all.... thats so annoying people from texas are not all rednecks and racist!!! Austin is a very cool town, and UT is an awesome school filled with a variety of people. A lot of liberal, earthy people live in Austin.. not rednecks. Where in Texas are you living now??!

May I echo the previous answer that Austin and UT are both liberal places to be. UT has more international students than almost any other University in the country as well as some of the brightest students around. Getting into UT is not a given. Although it is a state school, they do not automatically admit all comers and they are quite selective in their admission policies. All that I have heard about San Francisco is not good, but mostly, so I do not know how to compare the two cities. I can say that I lived there for 8 years, have two grown sons that live there now, and I am making a permanent move back there in the next few months. My sons went to UT and are anything but rednecks or racists. My oldest son went to UT, had roommates from India and Maylaysia and friends from all over the world. His wife of 9 years is from Mexico City - we are Scotch Irish Americans. My younger son went there too. Is part of the artsy/craftsy bunch being a talented artist and works in the theater industry in the area on production crews as well as production staff for Broadway plays coming to town and rock bands, etc. My daughter dates a young black man. Not every family is enlightened but if you are looking for non-judgmental people, accepting of diversity and interested in getting to know many different kinds of people, you can't beat Austin.
