i've never heard of Southwestern University, so I'm going to go with University of Texas at Austin because I've heard of it before.

There's no single accepted measure of "prestige" for universities, so your question can't be answered by a simple choice of one or the other. Also, the two schools are not really comparable. SU is a private liberal arts college with an enrollment of about 1300. UTA is a public research institution enrolling about 50,000 students at all levels through the doctorate. They both have claims to "prestige:" SU is one of the top schools for promoting civic engagement and making a difference in students' lives. UTA has a number of programs which are highly rated in their disciplines, and overall it is a respected institution. By its sheer size, UTA undoubtedly offers more resources and opportunities in science and math. On the other hand, whether a given student will flourish there depends on his/her preparation, abilities, and (esp.) self-discipline. Some students will do better in a smaller setting, with closer interaction with faculty and advisors. So in addition to looking at prestige rankings and resources, be sure to look at the "fit" between the school and the student.

UT is a much better school: higher enrollment, more research dollars, prestigious faculty. Not to mention that Austin is a cultural and party mecca. However, if it's science or mathematics you're interested in, take a good look at Texas A&M. In these areas, A&M has no equal in the state. Texas Tech in Lubbock is a close runner-up.

Your question is like asking which baseball team is better, the New York Yankees or the Carolina Mudcats (which is a AA team). UT in Austin is a great public university, while Southwestern is a liberal arts school that people outside of Texas have never heard of.

What are some really nice SMALL farm towns near Austin, Texas...?
In May I am graduating and definitely want to move out of CA. I am originally from the Midwest and am craving that similar friendly atmosphere again and thing Texas will be great. I heard Austin has a great school for Wildlife Biology, and I am really considering it. I do NOT though want to live in the city, I am more of a small town, farming, land, kinda gal, ...any ideas of any cheap friendly farming towns pretty close to Austin? Thanks very much :)

Check out Bastrop, they have a really nice downtown. Taylor, Smithville and Pflugerville are also nice (though Pville is more of a suburb than a farm town these days). Elgin sucks, imo.

Driving west on 290 you come across alot of small kind of country towns. I'm from the woods of East Texas, and Bastrop feels just like home to me, not sure I would call it a "farm town" though. I also think it's pretty cheap to live there. I would not recommend Pflugerville. It is basically Austin's pinky finger. Sure, you're technically in another town, but you're still so close to Austin that the city lights make it too bright to see any stars. And it DEF isn't a country town. All it is is suburbs. Skip it.

Is there any other old school Thrash Metal Maniacs in Austin Texas?
I'm 31 years old. Grew up in the 80's with bands such as Whiplash, Hallow's Eve, Carnivore, Artillery, Annihilator, Metallica, Destruction, Anthrax, Vio-lence, Tankard and many more. I work overnights, have kids and Never get out of my house. I need to find some cool Thrash metal Fans to go to some Concerts with. Just seeing if there are many of us Thrash metal fans left? I know there is plenty of Death/Screamo Fans. I like some of that, but mostly into Thrash Metal. I need some Thrash Metal friends. If you live in Austin. Respond here!!!!

Hi! I think your best bet would be to go to a concert and meet people there. I looked for an austin forum for thrash metal fans, but came up with nil. The 1st poster suggested Craigslist, and I agree. It's a good place to meet people. I think you would have decent luck there. I see ads for people wanting to meet specific types of people there pretty often. Your ad would get more views than Yahoo Answers, too. Good luck! =)

Which law school? Washington University in St. Louis or University of Texas at Austin?
Which law school? Washington University in St. Louis or University of Texas at Austin?
I am deciding between attending the two law schools. If you have and good/bad knowledge/experience with these schools please advise. UT Austin seems more presitigous but a big, maybe not as pleasant public school. WashU seems a bit less prestigious but possibly a nicer experience? Will I have trouble finding a high paying job in Los Angeles with either school?

UT is a big school, but everyone I know that goes there loves it. I personally think that you'll have a better shot getting a job out in LA by going to UT, since its widely recognized as one of the best schools in the country. Plus, living in Austin will get you prepared to living and working in a big, crazy city that has a lot going on. The problem with UT is that the enrollment is very large, so you'd be competing with a lot of students. But, that is something you could use to your advantage when trying to get a job at a big law firm.

In general, you want to go to the bigger name school. Of course, even that only matters for getting your first job. And there is an exception to that rule. Consider whether WUSL has a program for a particular specialty you want to study (e.g., maritime law) that UT doesn't have. It would be better to go to a lesser known school that has the courses you want than a better name school that doesn't. All that said, here's the most important thing. There are many, many more people graduating law school every year than there are jobs at law firms. Usually, only about the top 10% of grads will end up working as attorneys. The rest will go into other fields where their degrees are useful but not necessary (e.g., consulting). So, you need to bust your butt in law school to get better grades than 90% of the other students. And while you might have been among the best in your undergrad program, so where all the other law students. So, now you must be among the best of the best. Law school is so competitive that students have been known to go to the library and cut required reading articles out of books just so other students can't get the articles to read for class. Hey, being a lawyer is about doing whatever it takes to win. You better start acting that way now.
