Is University of Texas Austin really that great?

Is University of Texas Austin really that great?
Or is it just football hype... Why is that UT and A&M are the only recognized public universities in Texas? What about University of North Texas? Everyone knows Texas State is the party school, so does that place have any real value? I've been at a community college for a year, and its time to transfer next fall. UT is just SO large... I hate the campus.

There are plenty of really good public schools in Texas that aren't too big. If you'd like to find a smaller school, do some research, visit some campuses and get a feel. You'll find one you really like. You'll see. I attended the University of Houston. Good school, but it's big. My niece recently graduated from Texas A & M University Corpus Christi with a nursing degree. She says that it's a great school. She landed a great job, right away. Yes! The University of North Texas is a really good school. Visit the campus. Look around. Talk to people. Ask: What can they offer me? What facilities do they have for students in my major?
