In Austin Texas, can you get around fairly easily without a car?

In Austin Texas, can you get around fairly easily without a car?
I'm moving to Austin from a very small town (i.e. we have no public transportation at all). I have never ridden a bus (besides a school bus), or used the subway or a taxi cab or anything like that. How difficult is it to get around Austin without a car? I'm not afraid of walking or riding a bike to get where I need to go....it's just that when I move I probably won't have access to a car like I do where I live now. Thanks for the help.

you can, but that mean relying on public transportation. and the traffic in Austin is a nightmare. I would suggest trying to get a car, it will make your life easier.

2
There is public transportation here that is pretty reliable and nice w/good A/C (cheap as well, but I think they are raising the fees sometime in the future) - but it is pretty limited. Make sure you live somewhere on an active bus line if you're not going to have a car, because the buses definitely don't go everywhere. It's possible to live without a car, but it's not desirable since the city is so spread out and nearly everyone who lives here does have a car. Check out http://www.capmetro.org/ - they have all the routes listed with maps and a trip planner where you put in the starting and ending addresses and it will tell you what buses to take and when.

University of Texas at Austin?

University of Texas at Austin?
Is there any chance for me to get into University of Texas at Austin business school transfering from a two year school with a 3.6 gpa?

Yes, you have a great chance. In fact, you are doing what most people who live in Austin do in order to transfer in/be accepted by UT. Many future Longhorns start out by taking a few semesters at Austin Community College in order to become eligible for transfer status into the UT system. Good luck and Hook Em Horns!

2
Ordinarily you would have no problem getting in to UT, but McCombs (the business school) is HIGHLY competitive. That's not to say it can't happen, but you really have to have your stuff together--especially as a transfer student. 3.6 is good, but you're going to be going up against people with higher GPA's, so my advice to you would be to pull together as much additional stuff as you can for your application. Have you done any internships, or anything else that can make your application stand out? I'm sure you've already seen it, but I'm including the link to their admissions page for transfer students. I don't want you to feel discouraged--but you should definitely go at it with everything you have. It might be worth it to talk to someone at UT admissions, if you haven't already done that. At the bottom of the linked page I gave you are some statistics--of the 210 applications they received in 2007, only 31 were accepted--and out of that 18 were transfer students from a 2-year college. I hope this information helps you prepare for your challenge! Good luck!

3
Casey, Kangotraveler was so concerned with getting his own travel website on the response he gave you significantly misinformation. The School of Business at UT received 554 applications for admission in 2007. They accepted 119, 30% from 2 year colleges. While the first responder is correct is saying many students go to ACC with the intention of transferring to UT later, and there is even advice for ACC students on which courses transfer, when the applications are received, the people from the higher tier 4 year schools are accepted first. The average GPA of students transferring into UT Business in 2007 was 3.82. Hope this helps.

2
May I echo the previous answer that Austin and UT are both liberal places to be. UT has more international students than almost any other University in the country as well as some of the brightest students around. Getting into UT is not a given. Although it is a state school, they do not automatically admit all comers and they are quite selective in their admission policies. All that I have heard about San Francisco is not good, but mostly, so I do not know how to compare the two cities. I can say that I lived there for 8 years, have two grown sons that live there now, and I am making a permanent move back there in the next few months. My sons went to UT and are anything but rednecks or racists. My oldest son went to UT, had roommates from India and Maylaysia and friends from all over the world. His wife of 9 years is from Mexico City - we are Scotch Irish Americans. My younger son went there too. Is part of the artsy/craftsy bunch being a talented artist and works in the theater industry in the area on production crews as well as production staff for Broadway plays coming to town and rock bands, etc. My daughter dates a young black man. Not every family is enlightened but if you are looking for non-judgmental people, accepting of diversity and interested in getting to know many different kinds of people, you can't beat Austin.

No none of them. It's a very diverse school, very liberal, and in a big city. There are people of all races and kinds (LOTS of Asians) and pretty much no one here has an accent. It's a great school especially if you don't know what to major in b/c it has a lot of well-rounded departments. ...and yea your question of "how does that happen if it's true?" is right, it's not true, nobody is racist, a redneck, or even very conservative, this is the Berkley of the South. I have no idea who told you that but they are pretty dumb! (They might have been referring to Texas A&M)

Texas A&M is a great university with great school spirit with a great CE program but the campus is not close to any major city. University of Texas is in a great city with great nightlife. Both have about equal quality programs but I lean slight to Texas A&M. I suggest you visit both campuses more than once and talk to the professors in the college of civil engineering at both schools and talk to the students of each school. See how much student involvement both schools have when it comes to ASCE chapters and how much support each school gives to the CE department and students. Then see which campus environment you think you will flourish in the best. Also look at the surrounding area and dorms and see where you would like to live for the next 4 years and what kind of people you will be living with for the next 4 years of your college life. No matter what the rankings, you will get more out of a lower ranked school if you like the environment than a higher ranked school if you are miserable.

Are you talking about a tote the note car place? If so I think you'll do just fine. For one thing-people usually put a great sum of money down and don't make payments, you repo and do it all over. So in the long run your making more on this type of sales. I'm going off what one of my friends have told me, he has this type of dealership. And with Austin being a college town, I think you wold do quiet well, good luck!

Go and visit them. I would pick the school on three things. 1) Can you afford it? 2) Do they offer the specific school of message you want or all of them (as I'm sure there are many different "schools" or message methods)? and 3) Do you feel comfortable with the staff? If you can answer yes to all three of those, it's probably a good place for you.

I'd say look up the city's school board website. There's usually job postings on the their site.

2
Have him check on yahoo jobs. If nothing there look on yahoo yellow pages for schools and have him call there.

3
Apart from major job websites like Monster, Hotjobs and Careerbuilder where your friend could apply for jobs and post his resume online,he could also search for jobs on websites like Craigslist, Simply Hired and Indeed. Check this out for more information http://www.pcworkathome.net/jobwebsites.html

4
You should look into Austin ISD, then go to Human Resources. Also find out the schools around the neighborhood and go directly to there websites. Good Luck

5
Yes, there are online registries, but most of them are national. He could also check out local school district web sites and he might find a few job postings. BUT the best way to do it is to call the schools directly. Many districts don't advertise all available positions. If they have many candidates' paperwork on file, oftentimes they don't advertise openings at all. If he calls the schools directly he can ask if there are any openings. Also, if possible, he should send a letter of interest directly to the principals of schools in addition to human resources. There's a helpful eBook about finding teaching jobs-- http://www.iwantateachingjob.com . It has information about applying for teaching jobs, finding jobs, interview tips, etc. Good luck.

There are plenty of really good public schools in Texas that aren't too big. If you'd like to find a smaller school, do some research, visit some campuses and get a feel. You'll find one you really like. You'll see. I attended the University of Houston. Good school, but it's big. My niece recently graduated from Texas A & M University Corpus Christi with a nursing degree. She says that it's a great school. She landed a great job, right away. Yes! Well I am from Texas so something would be wrong if I have not heard of it. :) It is a good school and if you are liberal, it is the place to be. I think they have like a 50% acceptance rate. Many students who are in the top ten percent apply there because in the state of Texas, any student who graduated from a texas high school in the top 10% of their class, automatically gets in. It is kinda like a public Yale, Duke, Harvard, etc without the low acceptance rate. That is my opinion though. It is prestigious nationwide, but I do not know about worldwide.

Hey fellow Longhorn! All I know is that switching into the business school is pretty difficult, but perhaps possible. Especially since you're out of state, you might want to go to the website and e-mail some of the advisors about your situation. They can give you a more exact answer. What college are you in right now? Good luck getting in!!! Hook 'em!

2
You can transfer into McCombs after one year if your gpa is above the internal transfer cutoff. Typically that's about 3.6, which is relatively high but should be doable if you work hard. You also need to take calculus, economics, and a foreign language before you transfer. You can read all about the requirements for an internal transfer on the website. Your major doesn't matter, just be sure to get good grades in your classes and you'll be in.

3
McCombs School of Business is highly competitive and extremely tough for non-Texas applicants. Check the transfer website on McCombs School of Business website for more info. Just a note, the average GPA is around a 3.85 for transfers. Do a Liberal Arts major which would get you in the right direction for becoming a business major at UT-Austin.

4
You should start off in Liberal Arts-its the easiest to get into!

Back in the 80s I lived in northern San Antonio (281 and Bitters) and commuted to Austin (Airport and 56th). Took me about an hour and 40 minutes, back in the days of the 55mph speed limit. Think of this: You'll be putting wear and tear on the car, and have to pay for gas and oil changes. Back then (dinosaurs walking the earth and such) I was putting 175 miles a day on the car going back and forth. Five days a week, did this for six months. Got to hate it. I was pumping in nearly 7 gallons of gas a day. Figure 50 cents a mile for gas, oil, maintenance, repairs, depreciation. That's $87.50 a day. I don't know how many days you'll be going a week, but multiply by that, and figure it over the two years you'll be doing your MBA. Unless you live in south Austin and average 90 it'll take longer to get to UTSA than you think. Figure an hour and a half to be safe. Also remember that is nearly three hours a day you'll be on the road. Not good for all the studying and projects you'll need to do. I just looked at student housing. Geez, times have changed from my college days. Weigh the benefits versus the problems.

2
It's approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes from Austin to UTSA when the traffic is good (it can get pretty ugly on I 35). If you're having to commute on a daily basis, I would think it would get tiresome pretty quickly. If you will only be commuting 2 or 3 days a week, it would probably be fine.

2
It's generally agreed that UT-Dallas has the best computer science program in Texas -- McDermott ensured that from the financial side. A&M also has a great reputation in computer science (they have the inventor of C++, among other things). I'm an honors student at UT-Austin, and our computer science program, I hear, is really good, too. Especially our honors CS program, the Turing Scholars. But I don't think you can get in to Turing Scholars once you've already started college. So of the three that you listed, UT-Austin is the place to go: Texas Tech and Arlington are weak, and don't have strong CS programs, at least, certainly not as strong as UT's. But UT -Dallas is supposed to have a better program than we do, so you might want to stick with it. Plus the fact that UT-Austin is so much more expensive. Keep that in mind, too, if that's an issue for you. Ummm, in terms outside of CS, I can tell you that life in Austin is way better than life in Dallas! Something for everybody, open-minded, and very relaxed. And it's not as hard to get in to UT-Austin through transfer as most people think; lots of openings are created from people dropping out because they got in with the top 10% rule from noncompetitive school and they can't handle or afford UTA. So there's a lot of room for transfers. My advice is to give it a shot.

Tell her to forget about high school. Take the GED, and enroll in a Junior College. An Associate of Arts or Bachelor of Arts diploma will be much better to have on her CV. No one cares about high school.

Why settle for just a job that pays so-so? Why not take an interest test? They are available at most community colleges. Once you know what would light your fire, find a business in that field and ask them if you could apprentice there over the summer. The pay WOULD probably be so-so, but there is also the chance for college credit in that field, maybe even a career opportunity for when you graduate high school. You seem pretty articulate. You shouldn't have any trouble at all finding a placement. If you lived in Roswell, I'd hire you in a minute, to promote my text messaging business. Be sure to ask the guidance counselor at your school how to go about getting a work permit. It will open doors for you. Best wishes!

I keep hearing that UT Austin is a really smart school and hard to get into, I go to UTD by the way, I was accepted to Austin but didn't want to go so far, is it true that it is the best school in texas like a lot of people say?

I got into UTSA with no problem. I think it all has to do with how well they think you'll do as a student. And Austin is a cool town so lots of kids want to go there. All schools have their good and bad qualities.

2
Yes its a really good school to get into. Best school? I would say yes since it is definitely the most well known, and recognition attracts the best professors. With that being said, i remember reading somewhere that the average SAT scores of incoming freshman to UTD were higher than any other public texas university. A lot of reason that may be is because of the top 10% rule, a ton of people with amazing grades get turned away because spots are being filled by people with 3.4 GPA's who just so happened to go to a crappy high school which put them in the top 10% of said crappy high school. BTW i also went to UTD for EE, but transferred to UT Austin for Aerospace Engineering because EE was so boring it was driving me insane lol.

Primary, secondary or the college level? If you want your kids to get a great education in Austin, try and get into the Eanes School District. The high school in that district has made Newsweek's top 100 public high schools in the Nation, several times.

At least she asked about Austin. The kids in Round Rock are being home schooled, which is why they read at a 3rd grade level. Don't let the test scores fool you... the RR schools are doing great because none of the stupid Round Rock kids are actually enrolled.

I am single and looking for a fresh start, I am interested in Texas...I like Austin but heard that it's more expensive, but what if you move just a little bit outside of town. I am planning on going to a bartending school in texas, getting a job and living there...so any help would be great.

if you live downtown it can be expensive, but it is cheaper than downtowns in other areas. i can personally tell you that it is cheaper here than in dallas, and i have never heard anyone else say it was more expensive here than elsewhere in texas

2
San Antonio is cheap to live in and because it's a tourist town Bartending is a great way to make money. Austin and Dallas can be pricey to live in and Houston just plain sucks...I've lived in all four so I have expereince in each. To clarify, Austin is not expensive compare to New York and Los Angeles, but it is one of the most expensive cities in Austin, property wise and since the question was what Texas city was cheapest, Austin would not be the answer.

3
I don't think Austin is expensive at all. I guess it is all relative. Compared to anywhere in New York, California, or Florida, living in Austin is dirt cheap. http://www.centralproperties.com

4
San Antonio is far cheaper than the bigger towns and more affordable when you can buy a house. You can always drive to Austin for the music and film festivals.

i've never heard of Southwestern University, so I'm going to go with University of Texas at Austin because I've heard of it before.

2
There's no single accepted measure of "prestige" for universities, so your question can't be answered by a simple choice of one or the other. Also, the two schools are not really comparable. SU is a private liberal arts college with an enrollment of about 1300. UTA is a public research institution enrolling about 50,000 students at all levels through the doctorate. They both have claims to "prestige:" SU is one of the top schools for promoting civic engagement and making a difference in students' lives. UTA has a number of programs which are highly rated in their disciplines, and overall it is a respected institution. By its sheer size, UTA undoubtedly offers more resources and opportunities in science and math. On the other hand, whether a given student will flourish there depends on his/her preparation, abilities, and (esp.) self-discipline. Some students will do better in a smaller setting, with closer interaction with faculty and advisors. So in addition to looking at prestige rankings and resources, be sure to look at the "fit" between the school and the student.

3
UT-Austin..No doubt.

4
UT is a much better school: higher enrollment, more research dollars, prestigious faculty. Not to mention that Austin is a cultural and party mecca. However, if it's science or mathematics you're interested in, take a good look at Texas A&M. In these areas, A&M has no equal in the state. Texas Tech in Lubbock is a close runner-up.

5
Your question is like asking which baseball team is better, the New York Yankees or the Carolina Mudcats (which is a AA team). UT in Austin is a great public university, while Southwestern is a liberal arts school that people outside of Texas have never heard of.

6
UT at Austin is prominently prestigious. I recently applied to do Ph.D. there and am anxiously waiting for a response.

7
UT...no doubt

In May I am graduating and definitely want to move out of CA. I am originally from the Midwest and am craving that similar friendly atmosphere again and thing Texas will be great. I heard Austin has a great school for Wildlife Biology, and I am really considering it. I do NOT though want to live in the city, I am more of a small town, farming, land, kinda gal, ...any ideas of any cheap friendly farming towns pretty close to Austin? Thanks very much :)

Check out Bastrop, they have a really nice downtown. Taylor, Smithville and Pflugerville are also nice (though Pville is more of a suburb than a farm town these days). Elgin sucks, imo.

2
Driving west on 290 you come across alot of small kind of country towns. I'm from the woods of East Texas, and Bastrop feels just like home to me, not sure I would call it a "farm town" though. I also think it's pretty cheap to live there. I would not recommend Pflugerville. It is basically Austin's pinky finger. Sure, you're technically in another town, but you're still so close to Austin that the city lights make it too bright to see any stars. And it DEF isn't a country town. All it is is suburbs. Skip it.

Which law school? Washington University in St. Louis or University of Texas at Austin?
I am deciding between attending the two law schools. If you have and good/bad knowledge/experience with these schools please advise. UT Austin seems more presitigous but a big, maybe not as pleasant public school. WashU seems a bit less prestigious but possibly a nicer experience? Will I have trouble finding a high paying job in Los Angeles with either school?

UT is a big school, but everyone I know that goes there loves it. I personally think that you'll have a better shot getting a job out in LA by going to UT, since its widely recognized as one of the best schools in the country. Plus, living in Austin will get you prepared to living and working in a big, crazy city that has a lot going on. The problem with UT is that the enrollment is very large, so you'd be competing with a lot of students. But, that is something you could use to your advantage when trying to get a job at a big law firm.

2
In general, you want to go to the bigger name school. Of course, even that only matters for getting your first job. And there is an exception to that rule. Consider whether WUSL has a program for a particular specialty you want to study (e.g., maritime law) that UT doesn't have. It would be better to go to a lesser known school that has the courses you want than a better name school that doesn't. All that said, here's the most important thing. There are many, many more people graduating law school every year than there are jobs at law firms. Usually, only about the top 10% of grads will end up working as attorneys. The rest will go into other fields where their degrees are useful but not necessary (e.g., consulting). So, you need to bust your butt in law school to get better grades than 90% of the other students. And while you might have been among the best in your undergrad program, so where all the other law students. So, now you must be among the best of the best. Law school is so competitive that students have been known to go to the library and cut required reading articles out of books just so other students can't get the articles to read for class. Hey, being a lawyer is about doing whatever it takes to win. You better start acting that way now.

Austin, Texas...?

Austin, Texas...?
Tell me about it, please. It doesn't matter if you're a native or transplant. I'm thinking about moving there in the next two years. (Also considering D/FW, Houston, San Antonio, OKC, and Tulsa.) What are the best areas of the city to live in? Where are the higher crime areas? How about the traffic issues? What else is offered in terms of parks, recreation, arts, culture, etc.? I've been to Austin once and fell in love w/ the city. It appears to be very friendly, and the Downtown areas and parks are just gorgeous. 6th St. has a cool vibe to it also, but I'm sure that's more of a tourist-oriented area. A very brief bio: age 22, middle-class, college-educated, want to attend law school in TX or OK, caucasian, conservative, Southern Baptist, friendly, love friendly people, have gay friends yet do not support civil unions or gay marraige, have friends of many non-Christian faiths, hard worker, love warm weather, love a good # of beautiful women :) Thanks in advance! By the way, if it matters, I'm moving from Kentucky.

im currently attending UT and its been amazing! im completely in love with austin. the people are super nice the social life is amazing theres always something to do. it is warm most of the time which i absolute love. the trafic gets bad sometimes in rush hour cause basically there's only 1 highway to get around that goes through the whole city and its very bad on rush hour but its not that bad. you couldnt go wrong by coming here ud love it! this is a very friendly place if you're attending UT live around West Campus. Thats where mostly all students live and there are a lot of cool places to hang around and its very close to campus. the only drawback is that its kind of expensive. but definetely consider Austin. During the fall it would be awesome if u could attend the Lognhorns football games. everyone in the city gets crazy during the season and everyone watched the games all around the city its amazing!

(Ex: first day of math class they may say you need a 3 inch binder and a graphing calcualtor.) I hope this helps! =)

I am in top 10% and i cant decide which college is best for me. I plan to pursue a professional degree in pharmacy. i know austin has a good program. in texas tech the first year is free. but my sister says lubbock is depressing compared to austin. texas a&m has way lower gpa requirements. idk why? texas tech and texas a&m has high std affected students. Go with UT or Texas A&M. TAMU (as much as I hate to admit it being a Baylor grad and hard core Baylor fan) is a good school, so don't worry too much about their lower GPA requirements too much. Tech is just... bleh. I imagine they probably have a REASON (*ahem*) for offering a free first year. College Station would at least put you near within decent range of several good cities (Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas-Ft. Worth). My strongest recommendation is for UT, especially since you are in the top 10%.

2
You are very confused when it comes to knowing these schools... so is the first answerer. Texas Tech and Texas A&M have completely average STD rates. That is an absolute rumor. All 3 schools are great, apply to all 3 and then make a choice. I don't think you would get a free year of pharmacy school at Tech unless top 10% gets a scholarship or something... Alright I see the Red Raider guarantee. I'm not going to say which school to go to because all 3 are great schools, but don't let misinformed people like the one above tell you thinks like Tech is "Blehhh" and has a high STD rate and a bunch of other crap because it is a great university that is rising in reputation rapidly. Good luck in your search.

university of texas at austin!!!?
i'm currently a senior in a Texas high school, it's pretty competitive. my rank SUCKS. i've been an A/B student throughout high school (mostly due to the extremist of extreme laziness) with the exception being sophomore year because of some personal issues. i'm top 26% right now (137/523) and i'll try to send my transcript in again after this semester because my rank should be around 20% then but i'm not sure if UT will look at it because it will be a week or two after the deadline. but i have a good SAT score. i'm applying to their school of architecture even though it's really unlikely that i'll get in. stats - rank: 137/523 26% SAT: 2210 combined (M 720 CR 720 W 720) all AP/Honors classes through high school academic challenge 4 years (co-captain past 2 years) debate 9th/10th (won some awards) octathlon 9th (highest scoring member) newspaper 10th/11th (editor-in-chief 11th grade) a lot of work experience volunteer to teach religious education classes every saturday south asian female skilled artist in both traditional art and computer graphics pretty good writer decathlon team and AP studio art (12th) ap scores: US History 5 English Language 4 so my essays should be pretty good (one has to be about architecture) in all honesty, i just don't want to get capped. i will go to UTSA if i do, because i'm only applying to UT. i'm not sure if i'll even get into UT Austin School of Architecture let alone UT Austin. shed some light, please

Which is a better school - University of Texas@ Austin or SMU?
I'm an undergraduate student. I haven't completely decided on a major/career path but I am in between business and pre-medicine. I would major in Nutrition (only offered at UT) or Biology...or get a BBA. I know UT is higher ranked in business than SMU, but does that necessarily mean that UT grads get better job offers than SMU grads? UT is stronger in the sciences, so Iwould be a more competitive med school applicant if i stay at SMU..since my gpa would be higher? With scholarships, I would have to pay $13 k/year for SMU and $6k/year for UT. The lower tuition of UT seems very attractive. Also, I already spent one year at SMU. I enjoyed it but often felt like it wasn't big/diverse/fun enough for me. UT seems to offer more in the social aspect, but I am scared that I'll get lost in the crowd, especially as a transfer student. Please help!

Hook em' Horns! With being such a popular school, you're looking at some powerful alumni which could help you out in the future. Social scene is perfect...just lil' bit for every type of person. All around i believe it to be a great experience.

2
Both great schools. My sister attended UT for one year then transferred to SMU for the last two. She got two degrees in three years then was accepted to Northwestern Law School. I think it depends on your personality type. I would transfer to UT just because I love the atmosphere in Austin. Plus its just about the best value for education in the nation. And they have a med school.

3
Go longhorns! UT Austin is an excellent public university. Tuition is relatively low especially considering it offers tons of resources. Additionally, it seems like you aren't very satisfied w/ SMU. While I'm not saying it you will like it any better, UT offers a very different atmosphere. There's definitely a party scene, if you're interested in that type of stuff. Football is BIG in this campus. Get ready to spend weekends at the stadium where the majority of students will be cheering their peers on. If you don't like this type of life, then UT might not be for you. HOWEVER, UT is also an excellent academic school, besides its social life. They're pretty strong in just about every department-- some more than others though. Also, if your worried that you will get lost at UT - DON'T BE!!!! Most folks here are friendly and willing to help out.If you want the basic overview of each university, here it is: UT Austin -Public university in Austin, Texas -Cheap tuition for the resources you have -Vibrant and active social scene -VERY large w/ undergrad enrollment almost 40,000 -Offers a wide variety of majors w/ solid standards -Not religiously affiliated SMU -Private university near Dallas, Texas -Expensive because it is private -Much smaller undergrad enrollment than UT -Solid business school but lacks in the sciences department -Social scene might not be as encouraged as in UT---however, because its close to Dallas, you'll at least have night clubs to go to. Hope this helps you out!!!

I would call the bus station and ask them if there is any new's on the weather conditions, and if there has been ,or could be any cancelations ?Ask them how you can be updated if any changes are made,or delay's !

2
So it might be a little late (not in the BAD sence), but: 1) I've traveled in a bus (yes, in Texas) while there was a tornado. The bus center headquarters place radioed our driver. That's what they do during bad weather, you really do not need to be worried. 2) The weather in Austin is okay right now (trust me, I live here), just some rain, and it rains all the time, so it is okay. You really do not need to be worried. I know, as a parent, this probably brings little comfort, but just know it is okay down here.

3
Your concerns are well founded. There have been some tragedies involving busloads of kids in the Texas Hill country during flash floods. Most of those accidents have taken place in the resort areas near the campsites on the Guadelupe River. There are places where the water goes over the road even when there's no flooding, but again, those locales are in the back woods. The high schools in Austin are situated in urban areas with good drainage. You don't have that issue to worry about, but I can't make any promises about whether or not he loses his tuba.

UT-Austin would be a great place for undergraduate business, but the McIntire school at Virginia is a top five undergraduate business school. The education at the two schools would probably be comparable -- however, there would be better job opportunities from Virginia. Wharton is the top undergraduate business school -- and one of the best (if not the best) MBA programs. It is highly selective, so employers know they will get good candidates. Therefore, the top companies come to Wharton to hire their undergraduates. In addition, Wharton students get a great education. They actually take the same classes that the MBA students take -- and tend to do better then the MBA students. There is no undergraduate business school in the world that I would recommend more highly than Wharton.

As far as I'm concerned, the courts and Guv. Dubya screwed everything up about a prestigious academic career in Texas. You make app with a pool assigned paperwork. Top 10% of ALL schools not top 10% of ALL pupils gets a chance at a state university whether you are ready or not. The courts ruled that grades alone do not form the criteria. The Aggies have a perverted delight in Algebra I, II, III, IV. The Longhorns have a social nightlife. The Aggies used to have better athletic scouts, but this top 10% for everybody has given the 'Horns more talent to choose from. Better Engineering school? About the same. The Aggies seem to have preserved their old brotherhood better than the 'Horns have.

2
U Texas Austin has the higher ranked engineering program, but both U Texas Austin and Texas A&M are top 15 programs. Your grades are good for both schools, but your SATs are just a touch on the lower end of the average for U Texas Austin. They're right in the average for Texas A&M. It is possible that you'd be accepted into both of them.

Best school district in Austin Texas.*more details inside*?

Best school district in Austin Texas.*more details inside*?
I was considering the eanes school district ( I am moving to austin this month) for my 13 year old daughter, going into 8th grade. I heard raving reviews about the district but when i then talked to a teacher over the phone the information she supplied me with ranted about how entitled the kids were, spending time at the mall 24/7, judging each other on the biggest house best car, etc.(exactly what were trying to get away from.) Her friend who worked there quit after 3 months because the children, excuse me, but made her want to throw up everyday. She also explained that the teachers are only average. Now hearing this I am at loss for ideas of the school I should put my daughter in. Any inputs would be greatly appreciated.

Thats weird. :/ I heard Eanes was a pretty good school. My grandma is a teacher there for kindergartners. My cousins went to Murchison Middle school and they liked it a lot. I dont really know first hand though. Im going to be a senior at Dripping Springs Highschool and its only 15 minutes outside of Austin, but DSISD schools have a verrrrry good reputation education wise.

2
Yes, there are a a lot of stuck up, superficial kids. But, when it comes to academics Eanes is the best public school district in Austin. Austin ISD is not great at all. Maybe look into Lake Travis ISD, its about 10 minutes from Westlake(where eanes is).

3
Eanes is a great district but it's very expensive to live in the area. Austin ISD is horrible, so if you want the best for your daughter, I suggest finding something outside of Austin. Lake Travis is also good, maybe Pflugerville or Manor as well?

4
I found that the Baranoff/Bailey/Bowie area of AISD is a nice mix, good academics, but not too stuck up. It is in Shady Hollow area, which is West Slaughter/Brodie region of south Austin. Mine will be going into Bailey next year. Academic success begins at home, and regardless of where you attend school, you can get a good education.

5
Yes, Eanes tends to have that reputation -- entitlement, but academically, it is very strong. There are other school districts in the area that are highly rated. In Round Rock ISD, the Westwood high school feeder area is extremely highly rated, with Westwood being one of the top rated high schools in the country, plus it has a nice mix of students, ethnicities, cultures, economic backgrounds, academic choices (it is the fine arts academy for the district and an IB school) but it is TOUGH. My son took 13 AP classes, got a perfect score on the Math SAT and was not even in the top 10% of his graduating class of 2009.

The whole University of Texas branch is awesome for pre-med students!!! I attend the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in Odessa. Every 4 out of 5 students are accepted into a medical program. I have heard that every UT school has a good success rate for pre-med students. I am also a pre-med student...but i wanna go into gynecology!!! Try looking into newsweek polls. UT of Permain Basin is on there as one of tghe most sucessful schools i am sure UT Austin is on that list....Good Luck!!!

2
Actually, you don't need a degree to get into medical school. If you look at the pre-requisites, you only need 90 hours of specific coursework. I work at a local community college, and we have had several of our students go directly from here to UTHSC-SA for their medical training. Certain prescribed college courses and the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) are basic requirements for admission. The following prescribed courses must be completed with at least a â€Å“C” grade prior to matriculation. English: 6 semester hours Biology Lecture: 12 semester hours Biology Lab: 2 semester hours Inorganic Chem Lecture: 6 semester hours Inorganic Chem Lab: 2 semester hours Organic Chem Lecture: 6 semester hours Organic Chem Lab: 2 semester hours Physics Lecture: 6 semester hours Physics Lab: 2 semester hours College Calculus: 3 semester hours Biochemistry: 3 semester hours (substitute for 3 hours of Biology)

for a good education then yes the this school is good and you will get more from it if you keep your mind on studies and not the other things go on.

2
I know it's a very big school in a town that is known to have a party reputation but everything I've ever heard and read suggests it's a very good school.

3
All Universities, colleges and 2 year colleges the first year are party colleges....because it is the kids first time (usually) away from home and kegger on!....the second year you usually settle down and really hit the books are ready to declare, and the 3 and 4 year you are ready to graduate ...so don't worry most, not all, but most kids party their first year wherever they go to school.

4
Its a great university and has a good reputation for a lot of coures! So if you are considering it..Just Go For It!

University of Texas-Austin Law School?

University of Texas-Austin Law School?
Hello all, anyone here apply to UT-Austin Law School? How competitive is it getting into it? What was your GPA, where did you do your undergrad? How was your application process, was there an interview? If you were not accepted, which law school did you choose to attend instead? How has your experience been there? If you've graduated, did a law firm hire you soon after you graduated?

All good questions. I didn't apply there, but I can hook you up with the information you're requesting. "How competitive is it?" Very. UT-Austin is best law school in Texas, of course, and one of the best schools in the country outside the top-14. "What was your GPA / undergrad institution?" Your undergraduate institution won't matter in terms of admissions. As for GPA, I can tell by looking at Law School Numbers (I'll link you in my source section) that your chances of being admitted go up significantly if you're a 3.6 or over and a 167 or over, but UT-Austin does dip as low as 3.4 and 164, but only when the applicant's other number is higher. For example, with a 3.4, you want an LSAT over 170. With a 164, you want a GPA around 3.8. "Interview?" As far as I know, UT Austin does not interview for anything other than scholarships. "Employment prospects?" Actually pretty good. If you know you want to work in Texas after law school, then you'll have a strong advantage there. Texas is kind of an insular state and the firms there likel to hire from UT Austin. The school has a very strong alumni network. In addition, lots of firms from outside the state do OCI (on-campus interviews) there. According to the NLJ250 for 2009--the 250 biggest firms in America--Texas sent around 36% of its graduates into these firms. That's impressive and almost rivals some top-14 schools. Now, that data is a little outdated and the economy is worse right now, but UT Austin still has some of the best employment prospects outside the top-14 and absolutely dominates Texas. That being said, it's still a somewhat regional school. Whether it's self-selection or something, most Texas graduates stay in Texas. I wouldn't go to Texas over UCLA if you know you want to end up in California, by the way. "What is UT Austin like?" Never been there, but everyone says it's the hippest and trendiest city in Texas and that you'll like the school and city if you're used to a more campus-like feel in an urban environment.

Your opinion on colleges in the Austin, Texas area?

Your opinion on colleges in the Austin, Texas area?
I'm looking at schools near Austin, Texas. Mostly interested in private colleges. I'd appreciate your opinions and the pro's and con's of schools in the area. Classes? Helpful professors? Food? Safety? Know anything or hear anything about Huston-Tillotson University or Concordia University Texas. Others? Thanks!

I attended and graduated from Concordia and it's a fine institution. I felt like I got a quality education and the professors and staff were very helpful. They've moved campuses since I attended so I can't comment much on it's current location. St Edward's University is another great private college located in South Austin. I had many work colleagues graduate from there and spoke highly of it. They have a lot of evening classes (unlike UT) which makes it convenient for those working and going to school. I don't know much about Huston-Tillotson other than what they say on their website: "Huston-Tillotson University is an accredited, four-year, historically black college with a mission to educate, develop and direct students of any social, economic, spiritual, or racial background." They deem themselves a liberal arts college with a proud tradition of a multicultural education. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.

2
If you are liberal try Huston-Tillotson, Saint Edwards, or ACC. If you are small town oriented consider Texas State in San Marcos. Religious and studious consider Concordia. Fine Arts consider Southwestern in Georgetown. If I had it to do over again I would give higher consideration to the last two listed above.

3
St. Edward's, Concordia and Southwestern - all very good schools. Southwestern is rated as one of the very top small schools in the country. Has about 1200 students. Williamson County is very conservative but nice place to live.

I've got a 3.3 and 2020 SAT....luckily I'm in the top tenth of my school lol....Yay for lazy AP students....

What schools around Austin, Texas can help me find out how to work in DNA analysis? Is it genetics and biology?
What degrees do I specifically need? I am very interested in becoming a laboratory technician dealing with forensic testing. Is there online courses I can take? Do I need criminal justice degrees because of the legal side of this? If so, which degree should I look for in criminal justice?

Most molecular biology and genetics courses will offer dna analysis. If you're going into any science degree, they'll REQUIRE you to take at least an introductory course in protein synthesis and molecular bio. If you're very interested, you could find a professor who's currently doing research on these topics and apply as a lab assitant to gain offhand knowledge. I wouldn't really say there criminal justice is the related field.. I suggest the course ethics, as it ties in very much to the science side. It's listed as a philosophy course in my university though. I'm sure 99% of universities will have such courses like "molecular biology." genetics is more on the side of finding probabilities of traits that appear.

Is it Possible to go to School in Austin or Phoenix without a Car?

Is it Possible to go to School in Austin or Phoenix without a Car?
I'm not going to be able to take my car with me when I transfer out of state from Richmond,Virginia. I am looking at schools out of state and would like to work, live and go to school in either downtown Phoenix, Arizona or Austin, Texas. Is it possible to live without a car in either cities and still have a fun life. A lot of college students here in Richmond don't have cars so they have to make friends with people with cars, and/or only work, play and live downtown. Also in Richmond there are lots of jobs, and leisure activities downtown and we are a city of only over 200,000. So, aren't I right in assuming downtown Austin and Phoenix will have even more opportunities for young non-drivers? * I will be living on campus only for a while as well.

there is a public transportation service in the Phoenix area, plus, it's likely you will meet people that also go to your school, maybe an opportunity to car pool

2
Phoenix has a GREAT public transit system. I went to college there with no car and it was a breeze. There is a bus for every major street and lots of minor ones too. There are plenty of express routes as well and now they also have a light rail. You can get a monthly bus pass for cheap and they're pretty darn reliable time-wise. Because of all the colleges in the area, there are also a lot of starter jobs for college students. You also need to keep in mind that the transit system stretches to Tempe as well so it's not like it keeps you stuck within Metro Phoenix. Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler, Peoria, etc are all easily reachable via public transport. Public transport is never a 100% clean or creepy people free experience, but compared to a lot of cities, Phoenix has a great system going. I used it the entire time I was going to college there and never had a problem. Sometimes I'd even bike part way and throw my bike on the front of the bus for part of the ride. Because it's so hot in the summer, they really have to have a good public transit system or no one would get anywhere =) You can't walk or bike when it's 120. For the first summer you'll be telling people "DRY HEAT MY @$$!!!!" but you will get used to it. The first time you fly home to Richmond during the summer, you'll see what I mean. I was always poo-pooing "dry heat" until I stepped off a plane in Chicago when it was 89 (100% humidity) and I couldn't breathe. You don't sweat when it's 120 in Phoenix either. Well, you do, but because of the low humidity it just evaporates. You're hot, but you're not uncomfortable.

They play football in middle school? I thought it was outside organizations like Junior Football League or Pop warner that did. And another thing, who cares wat middle school your at, the main thing to focus on is the high school. And if your good enough to play at the next level, the high school dosent really matter either, they'll come find you.

You can't transfer in Texas, even middle school, for athletic reasons so you're SOL. However, get your parents to buy a house for you. That'll work. But really, the best middle school football program in Texas is George Strait Middle School in Frisco.

Through your personal info such as SSN, name, address, DOB, school attended, and etc. Your school counselor can probably help you with that. In my school, I just have to fill out a form for the counselor and he will send the transcript with a rec letter. Good luck.
